Ballycanew IWA Community Centre – 10 Year Celebration
The local community turned out to support Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) and people with physical disabilities as they commemorated the 10th year of service from the busy IWA Community Centre in Ballycanew. The important milestone was marked with a special day of celebration, which was which was attended by local organisations, community groups, council officials and politicians including the Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council, Cllr John Hegarty and Wexford TD, James Browne.
IWA’s Community Centre is located on the Gorey Road, Wexford and provides approximately forty people with physical disabilities with greater independence, freedom and choice, enriching their quality of life by delivering a broad range of social, educational and sporting programmes on a weekly basis. The proceedings began with a ceremony welcoming local IWA members and their families and all who have supported the Community Centres in Ballycanew, commencing with words of welcome from CEO of Irish Wheelchair Association, Rosemary Keogh who said:
IWA is one of the largest providers of services for people with physical disabilities in Wexford and from our Community Centre in Ballycanew we provide essential services including; educational and training programmes, social and recreational opportunities, and a dedicated information and advice service. Through successful partnerships formed with local people, statutory and voluntary agencies, neighbouring businesses and organisations, IWA is delighted to reach this significant milestone and celebrate our 10th year in the Ballcanew Community Centre.
Comprising a large multi-functional room, community meeting rooms, kitchen and dining area, as well as outdoor gardens and recreational space, IWA’s Community Centre also presents an opportunity for existing groups and clubs and it is hoped the centre will play a positive part in the development of the wider community in the coming years.
Speaking at the event Cllr. John Hegarty congratulated local members, staff and volunteers and explained:
Wexford County Council recognises the importance of providing for all of the citizens of our county and without doubt the programmes, facilities and opportunities that have been made available from IWA’s Community Centre in Ballycanew have made a huge difference to the lives of wheelchair users and their families and friends in communities all over North Wexford”.
