West Karate Club in Action

West Karate Club in Action

On the 13th May 2012 Galway's West Karate Clubs wheelchair students had their first competition that resulted in three first time winners at the Irish Open Shotokan Championships in Loreto Sports Complex, Fermoy, Co. Cork.

In 2011 West Karate Club introduced wheelchair/seated karate to their club. This class is available for all wheelchair users and people with physical disability. Wheelchair Karate allows people with physical disabilities to defend themselves and to have the opportunity to be included in an International Martial Arts Organisation. West Karate Club students had their first grading back in November 2011, which was the very first of its kind in the West of Ireland.

Some of their students are also involved with Irish Wheelchair Association based in Merlin Park in Galway, and with the Galway Speeders Basketball Club.
