Our experience at Clontarf Youth Club

As second year occupational therapy students we were given the opportunity to volunteer each week at the IWA youth club. We were both really eager to work with young people so were delighted to get involved with the IWA youth club as we had heard of the great work being carried out there.

We were both nervous at the beginning as we didn't know what to expect, but that quickly changed as soon as we met all the members. Everyone was so friendly and welcomed us with open arms. We jumped straight in getting involved in all of the different activities such as quizzes, sports night, beauty night, arts & crafts and baking. Each week there was a different activity so we were always excited for the next club night. Dave provided us with some great opportunities, even letting us run some of our own activities. Our personal highlight was definitely Halloween Night! Everyone dressed up (Dave as a banana!) and played festive games such bobbing for apples. Things got messy; eggs and whipped cream were involved!

During our time with the IWA we also got a chance to help with fundraising. We braved the cold winds of November, selling Angel badges and raising awareness of the IWA in our local areas.

Unfortunately our time with the IWA flew by and now has come to an end. We loved getting to know everyone and hope that the members enjoyed our company as much as we enjoyed theirs! The fun atmosphere and constant banter in the club was fantastic and we’ll truly miss everyone. It was an incredible experience, one that we will never forget.

Thanks for everything,

Ciara & Fiona.
